Getting a new refrigerator is exciting—whether you're upgrading for better features or replacing an old, unreliable unit. But before that shiny new appliance arrives, there are a few important steps to take to ensure a smooth delivery and installation. Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare your kitchen, protect your food, and make the most of your new fridge from day one.

1. Measure Twice—Deliver Once

Double-check that your new refrigerator will fit through all doorways, hallways, and into the final space. Clear a wide path for the delivery crew to avoid bumps, scratches, or tight squeezes.

2. Clear Path Ways

The delivery crew needs clear access to the driveway, doors, and final destination of your new refrigerator.

  • If it is winter, clear the drive and walkways of snow and ice.
  • If you have animals, this would be a great time to put them in the backyard or a safe space. No one wants to accidentally step on an excited dog or curious cat. After everything is installed and good to go, the delivery crew would be happy to meet your pet.
  • Clear a wide path for the delivery crew to avoid bumps, scratches, or tight squeezes.

3. Clear Out and Safely Store Your Food

Before delivery day, plan to reduce how much perishable food you have in your refrigerator. A few days ahead, avoid big grocery hauls and try to use up what you already have. On the day of delivery:

  • Transfer perishable items like dairy, meats, and frozen goods into a cooler with ice packs.
  • Use a second refrigerator, if available, to temporarily store your food.
  • Keep doors closed on the old fridge as long as possible to help maintain temperature until the last minute.

Tip: Food can generally stay safe in a cooler for up to 4 hours with plenty of ice or cold packs. Be mindful of time during the swap!

4. Pull Out and Clean Around the Old Refrigerator

Once your fridge is emptied, it’s the perfect time to give the area a good clean:

  • Move the old fridge away from the wall (if it’s safe and easy to do).
  • Sweep or vacuum dust and debris that may have built up underneath or behind it.
  • Wipe down walls, baseboards, and flooring where the fridge sat.
  • Clean the electrical outlet and ensure it's in good condition.
  • If you can't move the refrigerator, our techs will move the old one for you and give you some time to clean up.

Bonus Tip: If your fridge has a water line, inspect it for leaks or wear. If you're installing an ice maker or water dispenser, you may need to shut off the water supply temporarily.

5. Don’t Fill It Up Right Away

It’s tempting to reload all your food the second your new fridge is installed, but it’s best to wait:

  • Let the refrigerator run for 2 to 6 hours (check your user manual for specific recommendations) before adding food.
  • This gives the appliance time to reach its optimal cooling temperature—typically 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.
  • Why wait? Loading warm air and food too soon can overwork the compressor, possibly affecting performance or temperature regulation.

6. Recycle or Dispose of the Old Unit Properly

At Art Noey Appliance, if you pay for installation, haul away is included in the fee. You can always choose to hang on to the old if you want. When you're done with the old, check with your local municipality or utility company about recycling options.

Preparing for your refrigerator delivery is about more than just clearing space—it’s about setting your new appliance up for success. With a little prep, you’ll avoid food spoilage, make installation easier, and start enjoying your new fridge with peace of mind.
